If you're planning on visiting Mackay during the summer months, then it might be worth checking out the weather forecast before booking anything. Summer temperatures in Queensland tend to reach around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) while winter days are cooler at 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit). During the wet season (December through April) rain falls frequently, but when the sun comes out the humidity drops significantly. Rainfall is heaviest between October and March, although there is always some rainfall throughout the year.
When you arrive in Mackay you'll find yourself right next door to the beach. The best time to visit is probably mid-winter when the water temperature is still quite cold. Alternatively, head down to the river mouth where the sea meets the Coral Sea. This area is known as the Spit and is home to lots of wildlife. There are several walks along the spit and you can even take a boat ride across the channel. If you prefer to stay inland, there are numerous parks within easy driving distance of the city centre. These include Mount Surprise National Park, Mt. Glorious State Forest, Wooroonook National Park and the Pioneer Valley Regional Reserve. All these areas offer excellent walking trails and scenic views.
