Bologna is a city located in Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. It has an area of 599 km2 and had a population of 628,922 inhabitants at the time of 2015 census. The name "Bologna" comes from the Latin word "Bononia", which means "good town". In ancient times, Bologna was part of Etruscan territory. During Roman Empire period, Bologna became a municipium. After the fall of Western Roman Empire, the Lombards invaded the area. They were defeated by the Franks under Charlemagne who gave Bologna to his son Pepin. From 973 onwards, Bologna was ruled by the Holy Roman Emperor Otto I. In 1027, Pope John XIX granted Bologna the status of a free commune. In 1148, Bologna was conquered by the Papal States. At the end of the 13th century, the city fell into the hands of the House of Malaspina. In 1402, Bologna was annexed by Florence. In 1512, Bologna joined the Italian League against France. On 26 May 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte entered the city after defeating Austrians in Battle of Marengo. He proclaimed himself King of Italy and established the Kingdom of Italy. In 1815, Congress of Vienna restored the former states. In 1860, Bologna was declared capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Sardinia. After World War II, Bologna was occupied by Allied forces until 1947.
