Bologna is a city located in Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. It has been an important centre since ancient times, being first mentioned in written documents from the 6th century BC. The name derives from the Latin word "Bononia", which means "good town". In Roman times, it was known as Bononia Magna ("Greater Bononia"). During the Middle Ages, it became the capital of the Duchy of Ferrara. In 1404, during the War of the League of Cambrai, the city was captured by the Papal States and later annexed to the Kingdom of Naples. In 1859, it became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy.
Today, Bologna is considered to be one of the most modern cities in Europe, thanks to its high level of education and culture. Its university, founded in 1088, is among the oldest universities in the world. Bologna's cultural heritage is due to its artistic tradition, which began at the end of the 15th century when artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo lived there. Other famous figures include Giuseppe Verdi, who composed his opera Rigoletto here, and Gabriele d'Annunzio, author of the poem Fiume. Today, Bologna hosts many international events, including the annual San Petronio Fair, which attracts around 1 million visitors every year.
In addition to these attractions, Bologna offers a wide range of services and facilities.
