The first thing you need to consider before renting a motorbike in Nepal is where you plan to ride. If you have any experience riding motorbikes in India, then you probably know how dangerous they can be here. The roads are narrow, often winding and full of potholes, and many people drive without wearing helmets. It's not uncommon for drivers to swerve into traffic at speed, especially during rush hour. As well as being potentially fatal, accidents involving motorbikes are common place. For these reasons, it's best to avoid riding in Kathmandu unless you're experienced and confident enough to handle yourself safely. Instead, head north towards Pokhara or west towards Lumbini, both of which offer much safer roads.
When choosing a bike, make sure you look carefully over its condition. Make sure the brakes work, check the tyres, oil level and brake fluid levels, and check the engine for leaks. Ask about the history of the bike and ask what maintenance it has had done since purchase. Check the saddle height and adjust it if necessary. Also, make sure the clutch works smoothly and that the gear lever doesn't stick. Finally, don't forget to check the lights, horn and mirrors.
Before leaving home, ensure that you have everything you might need with you. Don't leave anything important behind, including your passport, money, mobile phone and keys. If you're travelling alone, make sure you take someone else along as a companion. They should be able to speak Nepali and English, and ideally, they should be familiar with the area.
